The Old Port:
must-do in Marseille

Marseille’s innate maritime vocation is celebrated in the Old Port. This is where the first settlers landed, and visitors still find it the main center of the city and one of its most picturesque neighborhoods. Every morning, the stalls at the Quai des Belges fish market thronge, while the cafes and restaurants dotted around offer plenty of opportunities to watch the boats and sample the food.

EXPLORE THE CALANQUES OF THE COAST

Calanques

The calanques are the particular coves which outline the coastal line south of Marseille. A national park since 2012, this area is home to remarkably rich wildlife, hidden fishing villages and marvelous landscapes. If the coastal coves are best explored from the sea, a hike allows total immersion in the flora and fauna of the park, as well as breathtaking views from the heights. In either case, you will have a refreshing break from the noise of the city.

The Frioul Islands and Château d’If

frioul

Opt for a boat trip on the islands of Frioul or Château d’If: the opportunity to discover the local fauna and flora, but also a piece of the city’s history, perched on a rock.
Take to the open sea for a real moment of escape which will allow you to taste the crystal clear water, appreciate the seabed, but also explore the numerous remains present in this archipelago.

The landscapes are a major asset of the Frioul archipelago. There are small sandy beaches and many magnificent coves.

NOTRE-DAME DE LA GARDE BASILICA: THE EMBLEM OF MARSEILLE

Whether you arrive by boat, by highway or by plane, this building is the signal of arrival in Marseille. Nicknamed “The Good Mother” by the people of Marseille, she dominates the city and the Mediterranean and is considered the guardian of sailors and fishermen. Built in the 19th century in a Roman-Byzantine style on the highest hill in the city, it reaches a height of 157 meters. It is accessible from the old port by car, bus, bike or on foot.
